  • Junior Volunteers

    Are you a high school student looking to explore healthcare careers, earn service hours, enhance your professional development skills, or just looking to make a meaningful impact? UCHealth's Junior Volunteer Program is a great place to start.

    As a junior volunteer, you'll be part of a vibrant hospital community during regular business hours, assisting patients and staff while gaining exposure to a professional healthcare setting. Whether you're helping in guest services, wayfinding, greeting families, or supporting staff behind the scenes, you'll play a vital role in our hospital's daily rhythm.

    Many of our junior volunteers go on to pursue college majors in nursing, pre-med, psychology, and public health - but all of them leave with new confidence, leadership skills, and a deeper appreciation for serving others.

  • Therapy Dog Team

    There's nothing quite like the joy a dog can bring to a hospital room.

    At our academic medical center, our Therapy Dog Team of volunteers provide comfort, laughter, and healing in ways that words simply can't. Whether offering emotional support to patients during challenging treatments or brightening a nurse's day with a wagging tail, these furry companions are a treasured part of our care team. They even get headshots for their business cards!

    Some of our most memorable moments come from pups in bowties and tu tus making their rounds, gently nudging patients' hands or curling up beside them in quiet understanding. From NICU to Palliative Care, these visits leave lasting impressions on everyone they meet.

  • Summer Teen Program

    Are you a high school student with a passion for healthcare and a desire to make a difference this summer?  

    Our Summer Teen Program is a competitive service learning experience designed specifically for rising juniors and seniors who are serious about exploring careers in healthcare. Over eight enriching weeks, students get a front-row seat to hospital operations, collaborate with healthcare professionals, and engage in meaningful service that positively impacts patients and families.

    Whether you're preparing for a future college or professional school application-or simply want to give back in a unique and impactful way-this immersive program offers hands-on exposure, learning sessions, and unforgettable connections. Our t een volunteers leave inspired, empowered, and better equipped to pursue their calling in healthcare.

  • How do I become a volunteer at UCHealth?

    Volunteer Onboarding Steps

    Step 1: Complete the Online Application

    Select and submit the application that best fits your situation from the drop-down menu above.

    Step 2: Read the Volunteer Handbook

    Get to know our mission, policies, and expectations by reviewing the Volunteer Handbook.

    Step 3: Complete the Volunteer Checklist

    Log in to your account to complete the checklist, which includes:

    • Education Modules (Parts 13)
    • HIPAA Training
    • Handbook Acknowledgement
    • Dress Code Policy
    • Confidentiality Agreement
    • Code of Conduct
    • Uniform and Badge Policy

     

    Step 4: Request an Interview

    Email us at uchvolunteerservices@uchealth.org with the subject line: Request for a volunteer interview.

    Most interviews are conducted virtually in small groups. A computer with a camera is required. Please let us know if you prefer an in-person interview.

    Step 5: Complete Startup Requirements

    After your interview, youll be guided to complete:

    • Background Check (18+ only, covered by UCHealth)
    • Health Screening (covered by UCHealth)
    • Final training modules, including:
      • Position Description Review
      • Clock In/Out Instructions
      • Parking, Lockers, and Transportation
      • PPE Training
      • The Patient Experience
      • Training Acknowledgement

     

    Step 6: Attend In-Person Orientation

    Schedule your orientation and get ready for your first shift!

    Pro Tip: All steps must be completed within 30 days of submitting your application. Incomplete applications may be removed, and the onboarding process discontinued.

  • What hours can I volunteer?

    Most volunteers serve one 4-hour shift per week, typically:

    • 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. or 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. (Weekdays)
    • Evening and weekend options may be available in select departments (4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.)

     

    A minimum commitment of 100 hours is required.

    Some internships and special placements may have different hour requirements. To ensure safe and sustainable practices, volunteers may not serve more than 20 hours per week.

  • Can I only volunteer during the summer?

    Yes, but a 100-hour commitment is still required.

    This typically means volunteering at least 12 hours, 3 shifts per week. Early applications are encouraged to help ensure placement by mid-May.

  • What is the minimum age to volunteer?

    Volunteers must be at least 16 years old

    Those under 18 will join our Junior Volunteer Program.

    Junior Volunteers gain exposure to healthcare careers while making a difference. Opportunities are available weekdays from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (no evenings or weekends).

    Many high schools offer credit for volunteer hours. Be sure to check with your school counselor to see if this is an option for you.

  • What volunteer roles are available?

    We offer diverse roles, including:

    • Inpatient units: Transplant, Ortho, Neuro, Oncology, ICU
    • Clinics and departments: Emergency, Radiology, Physical Therapy
    • NICU Cuddler Program (with training)
    • Non-clinical roles: Wayfinding, Green Room
    • Administrative support

     

    Right now, daytime volunteers are especially needed in our Emergency Department and inpatient units.

    We do our best to match your skills and interests with meaningful roles. A 100-hour commitment is required.

  • What is the different between the Summer Teen Program and Junior Volunteers?

    Our Summer Teen Program is a structured 8-week, competitive experience from early June to early August, requiring:

    • 56+ volunteer hours
    • Cannot miss more than 1 week
    • 4 educational sessions
    • Essay and two recommendations (from a school counselor and another adult)

     

    The focus is on service and learning about hospital careers.

    Junior Volunteers (ages 16-17) may also apply to volunteer throughout the year outside the summer program. These roles offer flexible schedules but may be limited by hospital policy.

  • Can I help without a long-term commitment?

    Absolutely! If you're part of a group (school, business, Scouts, church, etc.) or enjoy crafting, we welcome special projects and donation drives.
